Comparison
Onhand vs Midjourney
Looking for a Midjourney alternative without a subscription, or without Discord? Midjourney still wins overall image quality, prompt handling and editing depth. Onhand is for on-device, offline-capable generation on iPhone with a one-time Pro unlock, and it is not on the App Store yet.
By Onhand · Updated September 28, 2026

The short answer
Our editorial assessment is that Midjourney currently delivers stronger overall image quality, prompt handling and editing depth. This is not a controlled side-by-side benchmark. Onhand is for people who want generation and photo editing to stay on their own iPhone, paid for once instead of every month.

Where does each one run?
Midjourney runs in the cloud. You write a prompt in Discord or in the web app at midjourney.com, the work happens on Midjourney hardware, and the image comes back to your account. That is why it can run models far larger than a phone holds, and it is also why it needs a connection and a subscription.
Onhand runs on your iPhone or iPad. Generation and editing happen on the device GPU. Prompts, source photos and generated images are never sent to a generation server. Once a model pack has finished downloading, the app works in airplane mode.
How to prove any app is offline: run the 60-second airplane-mode test in the offline AI images on iPhone guide (linked below).
That choice has a cost. Onhand can only load models that fit in the memory the device will give it, roughly 1 to 4.5 GB per pack. Which packs a device can run depends on available memory rather than chip speed. The free pack runs on the developer test device, an iPhone 14 Pro with 6 GB. Larger packs need more.
Which one makes better images?
Our editorial assessment favors Midjourney for overall image quality, handling of long prompts, and consistency across a set. We did not run a controlled benchmark with matched prompts, seeds and human scoring, so this is guidance rather than a measured ranking. Midjourney’s server-side models are not constrained by a phone-sized memory ceiling.
Onhand ships a catalog of downloadable packs. The free one is a fast Stable Diffusion-class model of about 2 GB. Pro packs add more looks for portraits and scenes, plus a higher-quality model with better prompt following, FLUX.2 Klein 4B. These are good results for models that fit on a phone. They are not the same class of model Midjourney runs on a server.
The services also enforce safety differently: Midjourney applies its rules on the service, while Onhand checks results on the device. This comparison does not score either moderation system because they were not tested side by side.
What does each one cost?
Midjourney is a monthly subscription. As listed on 21 September 2026, Basic is $10 a month, Standard $30, Pro $60 and Mega $120, with 20 percent off for annual billing. Each plan includes a monthly allowance of fast GPU hours: 3.3, 15, 30 and 60 hours in that order, and extra fast hours cost $4 an hour. Standard and above include unlimited Relax mode, which queues jobs instead of spending fast hours. Basic has no Relax mode. There is no free trial.
Onhand is a free download, and the recommended fast model is free to use. Pro is a one-time purchase that unlocks more model packs. There is no subscription, no credit system and no cap on how many images you make. The Pro price varies by storefront and is still being tested, so it is not quoted here.
The shape of the bill is the real difference. A year of the cheapest Midjourney plan at the listed price is $120, and it keeps going as long as you want access. Onhand asks once and then stops asking. If you generate constantly at a high standard, the subscription buys something a phone cannot give you. If you generate now and then, the maths favours paying once.
Who can see your images?
On Midjourney, images are public by default. Its documentation states that this applies to images made in private Discord DMs and private servers as well, and that creations can turn up on the Explore and community feeds. Stealth Mode keeps your creations off the public feed and is included only on the Pro and Mega plans. Stealth Mode does not hide images you post into a shared Discord channel.
Onhand has no feed, because it has no server to hold one. Prompts, photos and results stay on the device. There is no account to create and nothing to opt out of. The app does use limited anonymous analytics and Apple and RevenueCat purchase services, and the privacy page describes exactly what that covers.
Rights are worth reading before you commit either way. Midjourney terms say users own the assets they create ‘to the fullest extent possible under applicable law’, that a company or an employee of a company with more than $1,000,000 a year in revenue must be on Pro or Mega to own its assets, and that users grant Midjourney a broad perpetual royalty-free licence. The terms say nothing about whether AI images are copyrightable, which is an open question either way.
What can you edit?
Midjourney has the larger editor by a wide margin. Its web editor includes Vary Region and an Erase brush for inpainting, Pan and Zoom Out for extending an image past its original frame, Remix, Move and Resize, Smart Select, Layers, Suggest Prompt and upscaling. The V8 generation of models, current as of September 2026, uses a distinct edit model for this work.
Onhand edits less, on the device. Every model does image-to-image with a strength control, so you can restyle a photo you took without it leaving your phone. The free fast model is the only one that does masked inpainting, where you paint an area and regenerate just that part. There is background removal on device, resize, style presets, an on-device gallery with history, and a Refine loop that keeps iterating on a result while storing the earlier versions.
- No outpainting. Onhand cannot extend an image past its frame.
- No LoRA, no ControlNet and no custom model import.
- No AI upscaling. Resize is a plain resize.
- No video, and no cloud fallback when a model will not fit.
If the job is retouching your own photos and the point is that they never get uploaded, Onhand covers it. If the job needs layers, outpainting and repeated controlled variation, Midjourney covers it and Onhand does not.
Is there a Midjourney iPhone app?
No official Midjourney app for iPhone. Midjourney runs through Discord and through its web app, both of which you can open in a mobile browser. As listed on the App Store on 21 September 2026, the only app published by the developer Midjourney is niji・journey, a separate anime-focused product rather than Midjourney itself.
Onhand is a native iPhone and iPad app for iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 or later. There is no Mac app, no Android version and no web version.
Which one should you pick?
Pick Onhand if
- You want prompts, photos and results to stay on your own iPhone.
- You would rather pay once than carry another monthly subscription.
- You want to generate and edit with no signal, on a plane or off the grid.
- You mostly restyle and retouch photos you took yourself.
- You do not want to create an account or join a Discord server.
Pick Midjourney if
- You prioritize Midjourney’s broader server-side capability and will pay monthly for it.
- Your prompts are long and specific and the model has to follow them closely.
- You need layers, outpainting, upscaling and a real editing toolkit.
- You work at a desk and are comfortable in Discord or a web app.
- The output is professional work that has to hold up next to commercial art.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official Midjourney app for iPhone?
No. Midjourney is used through Discord and through its web app at midjourney.com, both of which open in a mobile browser. As listed on the App Store on 21 September 2026, the only app from the developer Midjourney is niji・journey, a separate anime-focused product. Other App Store apps using the Midjourney name are not published by the company.
Is Onhand as good as Midjourney?
Our editorial assessment favors Midjourney for overall image quality, prompt handling and editing depth, but we did not run a controlled side-by-side benchmark. Onhand trades server-scale capability for generation that stays on your device and a price you pay once.
Are Midjourney images private?
Not by default. Midjourney documentation says images are public by default, including images made in private Discord DMs and private servers, and that they can appear on the Explore and community feeds. Stealth Mode keeps creations off the public feed and is included only on the Pro and Mega plans. It does not hide images you post into a shared Discord channel.
Can I use Midjourney offline?
No. You cannot use Midjourney offline: generation happens on Midjourney servers, so a connection is required every time. Onhand works the other way around: once a model pack has downloaded, generation and editing run on the device and work in airplane mode.
Is there a Midjourney alternative without a subscription?
Yes. Onhand is a Midjourney alternative without a subscription: the app is a free download with a fast model pack included at no cost, and Pro is a one-time purchase that unlocks more packs, with no credits and no image limits. Midjourney, as listed on 21 September 2026, is subscription only at $10 to $120 a month with no free trial. Expect a quality gap in exchange.
Can I edit my own photos without uploading them?
In Onhand, yes: you can edit photos without uploading them. Image-to-image with a strength control works on every model, masked inpainting works with the free fast model, and background removal runs on the device. Midjourney editing happens on its servers, so the image goes to the service first.
Is Onhand on the App Store today?
Not yet. Onhand is coming soon to iPhone and iPad. Join the launch list on this site to hear first. Midjourney remains Discord and web; there is still no official Midjourney app for iPhone.
