How to Generate AI Images Offline on iPhone or iPad (2026)

Yes, you can generate AI images offline on an iPhone or iPad if the model runs on the device, not on a server. Download the model pack once while you still have Wi‑Fi; after that, prompting, generating, editing, and saving work with the radio off. Onhand is built that way (on-device diffusion for iPhone and iPad). It is coming soon to iPhone and iPad and is not on the App Store yet. Join the launch list on this site to hear first.
Most cloud AI image apps fail the moment the connection drops, because the machine doing the work is somewhere else. Offline only starts after the model file is already on the phone.
60-second proof test
Use this on any app that claims to be local or private:
- On Wi‑Fi, download a model pack and wait until it shows as ready.
- Turn on airplane mode, and make sure Wi‑Fi is off too.
- Type a prompt and generate. The image should appear without a connection error.
- Optional: restyle a photo from your library (image-to-image) or refine the result.
- Open the gallery. Earlier images should still be there.
If generate fails the instant the network is gone, the work was headed to a server. For Onhand’s full product detail (what works offline vs not), see offline AI image generation on iPhone.
Offline starts with a download
The model behind these images is a multi-gigabyte file of learned weights. A local app is usually a small download; the model pack arrives separately the first time you choose it. App stores discourage huge binaries, and the split lets you pick which looks to keep.
Before a flight, a trip without data, or a stretch of bad coverage: open the app on Wi‑Fi and install the pack you intend to use. A pack of a few gigabytes takes minutes on a decent connection. A well-built app should resume interrupted downloads and check the file (checksum) so a corrupt transfer does not leave a broken model. After that, the pack sits in local storage until you delete it, reinstall the app, or install an updated package.
How much storage you need
Plan for roughly 1 to 4.5 GB per model pack. Install only the looks you will use, and leave room for the gallery. Finished images are small by comparison (often about a megabyte or two each).
Two constraints matter more than marketing copy:
- Working memory (RAM) decides which packs can run, not chip speed alone. A pack that fits in storage still has to fit in memory while it generates. That is why available models can differ by device. More: why RAM decides which AI models your iPhone can run.
- Packs should be deletable. Remove one after a trip if you need space; re-download later. Gallery and settings should not depend on keeping every pack installed.
A working airplane-mode session
Assuming a model pack is already installed:
- Disable networking (airplane mode; confirm Wi‑Fi is off).
- Open the app and pick an installed pack. New catalog entries and missing packs need a connection. Open any Pro packs you plan to use before you leave, so purchase entitlement is already available.
- Prompt and generate. Timing depends on device, pack, size, and heat. Being offline does not remove that work.
- Edit, save, iterate. Image-to-image and masked inpainting use the same local model. Results land in the on-device gallery; saving to Photos is local.
Generating offline is the same computation as generating with a signal. The network was never part of the generation pipeline.
What still needs a connection
| Needs a connection | Works offline (after pack install) |
|---|---|
| Installing the app from the App Store | Text-to-image |
| Downloading or updating a model pack | Image-to-image / Refine |
| Buying or restoring Pro | Masked inpainting (where the app supports it) |
| Seeing newly added catalog packs | Gallery browse / export |
| On-device safety check on results (if the app runs it locally) |
If you might want another pack on a trip, download it before you leave.
Battery, heat, and what offline does not prove
Running a diffusion model on a phone GPU is real work. A few generations cost little; a long session warms the device and draws battery roughly like sustained gaming. Heat can slow the chip. On a flight, generate in bursts.
An offline test shows that generation did not need a server. It is not a full privacy audit of later network behavior (analytics, purchases, sync, sharing). Read the privacy policy. Offline and “private” overlap but are not identical.
How Onhand fits
Onhand runs diffusion models on the iPhone or iPad GPU. No account. No subscription. Free fast pack; Pro is a one-time purchase. Packs ~1–4.5 GB; free pack ~2 GB. Test floor: iPhone 14 Pro with 6 GB for the free pack. Requires iOS 26 / iPadOS 26+.
After download: text-to-image, image-to-image, inpainting (free fast model), resize, background removal, gallery, with no generation server. No LoRA, ControlNet, custom import, outpainting, AI upscale, video, or cloud fallback. Text-in-image unreliable / not promised. Turbo packs: negative prompts do nothing.
Status: coming soon to iPhone and iPad, not on the App Store yet. Detail: offline AI image generator for iPhone and about Onhand.

FAQ
Can AI image apps work offline on iPhone? Yes, if the model runs on the device. Download once; then airplane mode works. Cloud apps cannot.
Why does the first use need Wi‑Fi? Packs are ~1–4.5 GB. Install app + download pack need a connection; generating after that does not.
How much storage? ~1–4.5 GB per pack. Onhand free pack ~2 GB.
Does airplane mode prove privacy? Proves that run needed no server. Does not prove no analytics/purchases when online. See privacy.
Will it run on my iPhone? Onhand: iOS 26+, enough memory for the pack. Free pack floor: iPhone 14 Pro 6 GB in developer testing.
Edit photos offline? Yes when on-device: Onhand img2img every model; masked inpainting on free fast model; resize + background removal offline after pack install.
